Fear Screen

Account Types.

At Fear Screen, our account system is designed to highlight the diverse roles within our community. While most users begin their journey as enthusiasts, we offer specialised account tiers for creators, contributors, and team members. These roles help identify your relationship with the festival and unlock specific features across the platform.

Fear Screen operates a multi-tier account system designed to reflect the diverse relationships within our community and the varied roles that members play in supporting and shaping the festival. Your account type determines not only your access to community features but also the tools and opportunities available to you within our ecosystem. Whether you are a passionate horror enthusiast, an active filmmaker, or a festival volunteer, your account tier is tailored to enhance your engagement with Fear Screen.

Understanding Account Tiers

Fear Screen recognises that our community encompasses multiple stakeholder groups, each contributing uniquely to the festival's success and the broader horror cinema conversation. Our account system is structured to acknowledge these contributions whilst providing tailored features that support each role effectively.

Your account tier is not permanent. As your involvement with Fear Screen evolves, you may transition between tiers, unlocking new capabilities and responsibilities aligned with your growing engagement.

Horrorphile (Enthusiast)

The Horrorphile tier is Fear Screen's foundational account status, granted automatically to all new members who join our community. This tier represents the heart of our festival: passionate, engaged fans of horror cinema who form the foundation of our audience and community discourse.

What You Get as a Horrorphile

As a Horrorphile, you enjoy comprehensive access to Fear Screen's social ecosystem, positioning you at the centre of our digital community. Your features include:

Social Wall Access: Participate in discussions with fellow horror enthusiasts, industry professionals, and filmmakers across curated discussion threads and genre topics.

Genre News and Updates: Stay informed on the latest developments in horror cinema, festival announcements, and upcoming screenings through your personalised feed.

Community Engagement: Comment on festival content, share recommendations, and interact directly with other members of the Fear Screen community.

Event Announcements: Receive notifications about festival dates, screening schedules, submission deadlines, and special events.

Full Platform Access: Explore festival information, filmmaker profiles, and community resources without restrictions.

The Horrorphile tier is ideal for those who wish to remain connected to horror cinema conversations, discover new films and creators, and build relationships within a vibrant, supportive community of fellow enthusiasts.

Filmmaker

The Filmmaker tier is a dedicated account status created specifically for creators, directors, producers, and other film industry professionals who contribute original work to the horror landscape. This tier bridges your professional portfolio with your Fear Screen community presence, ensuring your creative work is properly credited and discoverable.

Obtaining Filmmaker Status

Filmmaker status can be acquired through two distinct pathways, each recognising different forms of creative contribution to Fear Screen and the broader horror community.

48 Hours Later Challenge Participation

If you register your interest in or submit a film to Fear Screen's "48 Hours Later" challenge, your account will be automatically upgraded to Filmmaker status. This creative competition encourages rapid-fire filmmaking under tight constraints, and participating signals your active involvement in horror cinema creation.

Upon registration, your challenge entries are automatically linked to your public Fear Screen profile, creating a dedicated showcase of your challenge films. This connection enhances your visibility within the community and allows fellow members to follow your creative work across multiple submissions.

Fear Screen Horror Film Festival Selection

If your film is selected for screening at the Fear Screen Horror Film Festival, we will synchronise your FilmFreeway submission data with your Fear Screen account. To enable this integration, simply use the same email address for both your Fear Screen account and your FilmFreeway profile.

Once synchronisation is complete, you will be automatically credited on your film's dedicated festival page, and your account will receive the Filmmaker badge. This badge serves as a visible indicator of your professional status within the Fear Screen community and connects your profile to your selected festival work.

Filmmaker Account Features

In addition to all standard Horrorphile features, Filmmaker accounts unlock:

Professional Portfolio Page: A dedicated profile page showcasing your work, biography, and filmmaking background.

Direct Film Pages: Dedicated pages for each of your films, including synopses, credits, technical details, and community engagement.

Community Recognition: A visible Filmmaker badge distinguishing your profile within discussions and across the platform.

Networking Opportunities: Enhanced visibility to festival programmers, industry professionals, and fellow filmmakers within the Fear Screen community.

Festival Volunteer

Fear Screen's volunteers represent the human infrastructure that makes our festival possible. Whilst volunteers enjoy all the community features available to a standard Horrorphile account, they receive additional responsibilities and enhanced moderation capabilities that allow them to actively shape and protect our digital spaces.

The Volunteer Role

Festival volunteers support the festival across multiple functions, including community management, social media engagement, event coordination, and digital platform maintenance. Volunteers work closely with the core festival team to ensure that Fear Screen's community remains welcoming, active, and aligned with our festival values.

In addition to standard community access, volunteers receive:

Moderation Tools: Enhanced capabilities to manage discussions, remove inappropriate content, and maintain community standards across the Social Wall and other digital spaces.

Behind-the-Scenes Access: Involvement in festival planning, event coordination, and operational decisions.

Professional Development: Hands-on experience in festival management, community building, and creative industry operations.

Community Leadership: Recognition within the Fear Screen community as a trusted contributor to the festival's success.

Author

Author accounts are reserved exclusively for critics, genre experts, and long-form contributors who produce content for Panic Press, Fear Screen's in-house publication dedicated to horror cinema criticism, analysis, and cultural commentary. This tier recognises the intellectual contributions that deepen our community's engagement with the horror genre.

Author Account Features

Authors receive all standard Horrorphile community features plus:

Bespoke Dashboard: A dedicated editorial interface designed specifically for long-form content creation.

Drafting and Editing Tools: Comprehensive writing and editing functionality for developing articles, reviews, and essays.

Content Curation: Administrative tools to organise, categorise, and publish your work across Panic Press.

Editorial Calendar: Visibility into upcoming publication dates, editorial themes, and content planning.

Community Authority: Author status provides enhanced credibility within horror cinema discussions and positions you as an expert voice within the Fear Screen community.

Becoming an Author

Author status is granted to contributors who have been invited to write for Panic Press or who have demonstrated sufficient expertise and critical insight to warrant inclusion in our publication. The invitation process is selective and based on the quality of your writing, your understanding of horror cinema, and your ability to engage meaningfully with the genre.

If you believe your work aligns with Panic Press and you wish to discuss potential contributions, contact our editorial team via the Fear Screen website.

Festival Judge

Festival Judge accounts represent the most exclusive and prestigious tier within the Fear Screen community. Festival Judges are experienced professionals from across the screen industries who play a fundamental role in evaluating festival submissions, providing expert feedback to creators, and ultimately shaping the direction of the Fear Screen Horror Film Festival programme.

The Festival Judge Role

Festival Judges engage in a rigorous, professional selection process designed to identify the most compelling, original, and accomplished horror films submitted to the festival. Judges bring diverse perspectives, extensive industry experience, and a deep commitment to supporting independent horror cinema.

The responsibilities of a Festival Judge include:

Submission Evaluation: Reviewing submitted films against standardised evaluation criteria covering artistic merit, technical quality, narrative strength, and genre alignment.

Deliberation and Discussion: Participating in selection meetings where judges discuss films, share perspectives, and collectively determine which films will be screened at the festival.

Constructive Feedback: Providing thoughtful, actionable feedback to filmmakers whose work may not have been selected, supporting the broader creative community.

Programme Curation: Contributing expertise and perspective to the overall shape and character of the festival programme.

Selection and Backgrounds

Festival Judges are drawn from two primary sectors within the screen industries, each bringing valuable expertise and perspectives:

High-End Television and Feature Film Production: Judges with credits in professional television and film production bring deep understanding of production values, technical excellence, and industry standards.

Independent Film Sector: Judges from the independent film community bring firsthand experience of filmmaking constraints, creative innovation, and the unique challenges and opportunities of autonomous production.

This diverse background ensures that the selection committee evaluates submissions from multiple professional angles and maintains commitment to both emerging voices and accomplished creators.

Becoming a Festival Judge

Festival Judge status is extended exclusively through direct invitation. The Festival Director and senior team identify and invite experienced professionals to serve as judges, typically through existing professional relationships, prior collaborations, or demonstrated expertise in horror cinema curation and criticism.

There is currently no open application process for Festival Judge appointments, and this status cannot be requested through standard account upgrade pathways. The invitation-only approach ensures several critical objectives:

Demonstrable Expertise: Every Judge possesses verifiable expertise in their field and a proven track record of professional accomplishment.

Genre Knowledge: Judges demonstrate comprehensive understanding of horror cinema across multiple eras, subgenres, and international contexts.

Fair Assessment: The selection process ensures that every Judge has the professional maturity and experience required to evaluate submissions constructively and impartially.

Community Trust: The invitation-only model reinforces that Festival Judge status is earned through professional achievement rather than seniority or external factors.

As such, the Festival Judge role stands as one of the most respected and trusted positions within the Fear Screen community, reserved for professionals whose expertise and commitment to horror cinema are exemplary.
